Delta Spirit/Jeff the Brotherhood

Since forming from the ashes of the San Diego emo outfit Noise Ratchet, alt-country rockers Delta Spirit have operated on the fringes of a scene that’s already on the margins of mainstream music. The band’s 2006 debut, I Think I’ve Found It, features simple pop tunes with pleasant melodies that owe as much to the Beatles as to the Byrds. The group, which recently moved to Brooklyn, continued to mine that musical vein on 2008’s Ode to Sunshine. Its latest album, a self-titled effort that came out earlier this year, doesn’t reflect the band’s change in location. Songs such as “Tear It Up” and “California” feature sunny, shimmering melodies that sound a bit rougher around the edges than the group’s previous endeavors. Nashville-based Jeff the Brotherhood opens the show, but they could just as easily be headliners. Earlier this year, the Nashville band that sounds like a crafty cross between Weezer and Cheap Trick issued its major-label debut to wide acclaim. (Jeff Niesel)
