Soap box derbies may have lost some of their prominence in the American psyche since the All American Soap Box Derby began way back in the 1930s, but that doesn’t mean that the past time has gone the way of zoot suites and disappeared entirely. While the race doesn’t draw as well as it did in its heyday in the '50s and '60s, Akron’s annual celebration of the downhill race draws derbiers from around the world — last year’s race saw participants from Germany, Japan and New Zealand. Racers will take to Derby Downs to conquer the 954-foot track, hoping to earn one of the coveted gold or red jackets that are presented to the local and rally champion winners. The race day opening ceremonies start at 8 a.m.; tickets are $5. (Jacob DeSmit)
