Drive-By Truckers

Ugly Buildings, Whores & Politicians: Greatest Hits 1998-2009 (New West)

The rub of course is that the Drive-By Truckers aren't much of a singles band, which makes this greatest-hits set both a misnomer and not really the ideal way to hear these consummate album artists. But damned if Ugly Buildings, Whores & Politicians: Greatest Hits 1998-2009 doesn't hold up as a terrific primer on one of the decade's best groups. The 16 tracks gathered here come from the Truckers' most fruitful period, an 11-year span that included seven strong albums of muscular southern rock laced with down-home twang and sticky R&B. The band's three singers, guitarists, and songwriters share space on DBT classics like "Zip City," "Outfit," and "Lookout Mountain." Start with these appetizers, and then sink into the band's albums for a full taste of their hearty greatness. — Gallucci
