Driving Miss Drunk

Looking to get totally hammered? Apex is the bar for you.

Apex Night Club helps crack down on drunk driving with its Free Limo Rides every Tuesday and Thursday. Manager Johnny Cartwright even jumps behind the wheel of the eight-seat Lincoln Continental for the task. Since the service started last month, a steady stream of customers has taken him up on lifts to and from the club. “Come to the bar,” says Cartwright. “You don’t have to worry about getting home.”

At first, the objective was to keep inebriated patrons off the roads. But winter weather has also figured into the program’s popularity. “People don’t want to [drive] when it’s bad,” says Cartwright. There are a couple of catches to scoring a free ride, however. First, riders must live within a 10-mile radius of the club. And once they get there, they have to stay -- and drink -- at the bar for at least two hours. Apex plans to invest in a second limo if the service remains popular. “I don’t want anyone waiting too long,” says Cartwright. “I want to get you to the bar as fast as humanly possible.”
