The English Beat formed during England's ska revival of the late '70s. It featured two charismatic singers — blue-eyed soul man Dave Wakeling and toaster Ranking Roger — that separated the Beat from most of the other bands it was usually lumped in with. By the time it released its final album in 1982, the group was blending new-wave hooks into its reggaefied mix. Wakeling and Roger continued on as General Public for a few years before going separate ways. These days, Roger tours with General Public; Wakeling leads a new version of the English Beat. Watch 'em get nostalgic this week.
