Family of the Year/Oldboy/Dan Miraldi & the Albino Winos

When: Sat., Nov. 3, 8:30 p.m. 2012

Brothers Joe Keefe and Sebastian Keefe formed Family of the Year in 2009, and released their debut album Songbook in the same year. Family of the Year, as Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler describes it, is like “The Mamas and Papas on acid.” Pretty cool description, but if you don’t trust Tyler’s judgment because his outfits are strangely effeminate and he hits on women as if he’s still in his prime, that’s understandable. Ben Folds also really digs Family of the Year; in fact, he chose them out of 700 other bands to open for him in Boston in 2009, and to illustrate how big that was for the band, that show was their third performance ever. Now, the band has released its sophomore album, Loma Vista, which showcases its distinctive indie-folk sound. Songs such as “In the End” and “Living on Love” have feel-good lyrics, and tracks such as “Hey Ma” and “St. Croix” exude positivity. When every band member sings the choruses together, it will remind you of the time when it was standard for bands to harmonize. (Sam Mendez)
