Flee the Seen's debut full-length, Doubt Becomes the New Addiction, opens with the 45-second track "Celebrate the Static," all air-raid guitars and aggravated-banshee wails. Shows often start with the same song, during which band members jerk their bodies around in a violent angular manner like possessed androids.

Onstage, the intensity never wavers; the band's constant motion (especially R.L. Brooks' unhinged guitar-slinging) ensures tht even its catchiest, sweetest-natured songs get sweaty. Drummer Aaron Crawford, who sports a prodigious, curly, Coheed-style 'fro, unleashes some colossal backbeats, and the band sprinkles in a few massive breakdowns and metallic dual-guitar harmonies, but for the most part, the music is uniquely melodic, uniformly hopeful hardcore. Kim Anderson's strong, smoky voice sells the sincerity of lines such as "You are not alone/I promise," while Brooks' confident wail makes the rallying cry "Cancel my funeral" sound as though it were emerging triumphantly from a prematurely closed casket.

Flee the Seen's lyrical resilience, soaring choruses, and music-smitten stage presence trigger a "We'll have what they're having" effect, catalyzing cathartic sing-alongs likely to inspire some spectators to start their own bands.
