French Musical

When: Thu., Feb. 13 2014

How about an old-school French musical for Valentine’s Day, eh? The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, the classic French film from 1964 (50th Anniversary!) is about a shopgirl who loves a mechanic but marries another man; it plays tonight at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. This thing is entirely in song, so lovers of Rent and Jesus Christ Superstar, for instance, should certainly attend. Umbrellas is full of colors and joy and a “bittersweet aftertaste,” and may be just the romantic antidote if your relationship or marriage has lost a little spark. If you love Singin in the Rain, you’ll love The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. The film screens this evening at 6:35, and then tomorrow at 9:15 p.m. Tickets are $9. (Sam Allard)
