Fucked Up/Weed/Queen of Hell

When: Wed., July 9, 8:30 p.m. 2014

When Fucked Up dropped David Comes to Life in 2011, indie rock circles the world over flipped out with joy. The concept album was hailed as the masterpiece du jour and, in many ways, it was. It’s a killer album, and “Queens of Hearts,” for instance, will always carry that sort of high-water mark feeling that most bands must confront in one way or another. Glass Boys, the band’s 2014 release, is a less operatic outing, and that relative stripped-down nature helps quite a bit. “Echo Boomer” and “Touch Stone,” which open the album, meld the force of a quick one-two punch with Fucked Up’s melodic hardcore really well. That’s the precise sort of stuff that fans were clamoring for upon the album’s release. But it’s tunes like “Paper the House,” with a much more realized sense of the place pop structures might have in hardcore music, that make the new album as fun as it is. (Sandy)
