German Concentration Camps Factual Survey

When: Sun., Oct. 4 2015

A DCP import from London’s British Film Institute, German Concentration Camps Factual Survey provides a "sobering record of the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp by British troops in April 1945." Shot on the site by army and newsreel cameramen, the film came together after producer Sidney Bernstein of Britain’s Ministry of Information hired editors and writers—and Alfred Hitchcock, whom he considered the film’s “director”—to put together the raw footage. The intent was to produce "a definitive document of Nazi atrocities that would be shown to the German people and shame them into accepting the Allied occupation." A restored movie screens tonight at 7 at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. Tickets are $12. (Niesel)
