Hed P.E.

When: Sat., Aug. 24, 7 p.m. 2013

Filtering the wave of nu-metal from the mid- to late-'90s through the cloth of “G-punk,” Hed PE have always done whatever they could to push the mainstream insistence on genre signifiers away from them. By the time the band broke free from its major label in the early 2000s and recorded Only In Amerika - one of the raunchiest albums ever made, by most reasonable standards - it was abundantly clear that M.C.U.D. and his crew weren’t fucking around with social niceties. However they deemed suitable, the band wanted revolution. In hindsight, the band’s arc is a mixed bag of aggro funk and immature rhetoric, though it comes with no apologies. Two thousand three's Blackout remains a high-water mark, while more recent outings show the band at stratospheric levels of malice. Check out “It’s All Over” from Truth Rising for a sense of the present-day metal-tinged shtick. (Sandy)
