Wagner: Overture to the Flying Dutchman Mendelssohn: Overture and Incidental Music to A Midsummer Nights’s Dream Schumann: Symphony No. 4 in D Minor In the Flying Dutchman, the sea is the protagonist. The Dutchman has been cursed by the evil one to sail the seas through eternity and can only be saved by a woman’s love. Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream, captures the magic and frivolity in the world Shakespeare created. Leonard Bernstein noted Schumann’s symphony was a suite of separate movements which complemented each other but could be performed without pause and called the work a one-movement symphony.
