Hollywood Returns to Malabar Farm

When: June 1-3 2012

Decades before the Avengers’ cast took over Cleveland’s streets, glamorous Hollywood types were coming to Ohio. They were headed not to a film set, but to Malabar Farm, the grand home of conservationist, Pulitzer-prize winning novelist, and friend to Hollywood’s elite, Louis Bromfield. Nestled in the rolling hills of Richland County, about two hours southwest of Cleveland, Bromfield’s 22-room farmhouse offered rural respite to stars like Errol Flynn, George Burns, and matinee idol Tyrone Powell. Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall were married there. James Cagney sold veggies at the farm’s roadside stand. Today, of course, Malabar Farm is an Ohio State Park and historic landmark. But remembrances of past glories are never far removed. Take this weekend’s shindig: Hollywood Returns to Malabar. Beginning June 1, the three-day fest features frequent live appearances by the sons of some of those Hollywood icons, including Tyrone Power Jr. When we reached Power in his Malibu digs, the actor and screenwriter said he was looking forward to seeing Malabar Farm first hand. “God, it just looks beautiful. I’ve been fascinated by the photos of the place: You feel like you’ve stepped back in time.” A quick wit and engaging storyteller, Power will be joined by Stephen Bogart, son of Bogie and Bacall. Together, the two will preside over a series of special house tours, luncheons, and dinnertime soirees. For the house tours, Power says he’s been told Bogart will be stationed in the downstairs room where his parents were married. “I’ll be upstairs in the office, and people can come and talk to me and ask me questions. It’ll be sort of like visiting Santa — but without the presents. There could be a lot of crying!” Snag tix on the website, where you’ll find a complete schedule of this weekend’s events. Don’t forget to bring your camera!
