Given all the drinking, eating and carousing that goes on at the four-day Feast of the Assumption, it’s easy to forget the event’s long history and religious significance. Designed to commemorate the Assumption of Mary, the annual Catholic celebration started back in 1898. The event kicks off today at 10 a.m. with a mass. A procession through the streets of Little Italy follows and then it’s time to party as the Holy Rosary churchyard stands will feature a variety of vendors and amusement park rides. The fun starts at noon and the festivities carry on until 11 p.m. Feast-related activities continue all weekend, culminating with fireworks on Sunday night. Admission is free.
