Group helps guys come out of the closet - now in its 11th year!

by

If the Brothers’ Keepers gay support group sometimes seems like an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, participants at the weekly gatherings don’t seem to mind. Last month, everyone acted like they were on a talk show and talked about being homo in a predominantly hetero Cleveland. “I said that I loved being gay, and I wouldn’t want to be anything else,” says Bobby Green, the group’s co-facilitator. @cal body 1:The group has met every Thursday night for more than a decade. Its goal is to help gay men come of the closet. Since then, it’s assisted hundreds of members -- including grandfathers who’ve been married to women for 40 years. Members plan a potluck picnic at Edgewater Park every June, and the group marks its formation each September with an anniversary house party. “For gay men, this is really a safe, casual space to start, because nobody’s going to out you to a bunch of straight people,” says Green. “We go by the rule that what is said in the group, stays in the group.”
