HR/Obnox/Family Dollar/Scotch Bonnets

When: Thu., Feb. 7, 8 p.m. 2013

Seminal hardcore vocalist H.R. (aka “Human Rights,” aka Ras Hailu Gabriel Joseph I, née Paul Hudson — hey, at least he’s not “Soul Brains”) will take a break from his hectic Babylon-flouting schedule to play a solo set at Mahall’s. While fans of H.R.’s singular vocal style — all feral sniveling and strangled yelps over nasty, hook-laden speedcore — on early Bad Brains albums may lament the singer’s decades-long “shitty reggae phase,” his later, mellower outings boast the kind of shamanic introspection afforded by emotional maturity, spiritual clarity, and being, like, constantly blazed for half a century. And he’s still good for those rueful asides and, occasionally, the signature H.R. backflip. Also playing are local faves Obnox and Ra Washington and the Family Dollar along with the DC ska outfit Scotch Bonnets. (Hannah Franklin)
