When: Wednesdays. Continues through Sept. 26 2012
It’s 11 a.m. and downtown’s streets seem almost sleepy. But heads start to turn as soon as the food trucks start to arrive: painted a rainbow of colors and giving off aromas that make our tummies rumble. And just like that, the intersection of Walnut Avenue and East 12th Street is transformed into an impromptu festival — which it kind of is. A crowd gathers, a band begins to play, and everywhere we look, the lines are forming. The problem, we find, is deciding what we want. Almost all known food categories are represented in this tiny section of street. Cracked Mobile Food serves up gourmet breakfast sandwiches. Street Sensations dishes out gyros, cheese steaks, and fair-worthy fries. Zydeco Bistro offers a diverse menu of Cajun and creole dishes worthy of New Orleans — which just happens to be from whence the chef hails. Other truck menus are right there in their names: Fired Up Taco Truck, Elise’s Crepes, or Sweet! Mobile Cupcakery. Despite the crowds, no one seems to be aggravated. In fact, most are talking and laughing as they soak in the sun. Where are we, we think as we grab a shaded seat and bite into a gourmet cupcake. Mmmm. Wherever it is, we’ll definitely be back. Walnut Wednesday happens from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. through September 26. Be sure to bring your appetite!
