Rock & Pop, Seasonal Special Happenings

JD McPherson/Dylan Pratt

When: Tue., March 10, 8:30 p.m. 2015

When this Okie songwriter dropped his latest, last month’s Let The Good Times Roll, we all kinda knew that the title would be rather apropos. JD McPherson is the sort of musician we need these days -- a retro-bred rockabilly soulman with nothing but love for the people. Take “It’s All Over But the Shouting,” which weaves Little Richard rhythms through gentle organ and brass accents. When McPherson brings his guitar into the spotlight on that one, it’s clear that he knows how to color a song with different sounds. In another corner of the ring, “You Must Have Met Little Caroline?” shifts from crunchy guitar chords to an eerie, downtempo bass and piano interlude. Again, McPherson’s patient, restrained guitar work is where he so often shines throughout this album. In person, live and onstage? Even better. (Sandy)
