Jukebox Hero

When: Fri., Jan. 23 2015

Also known as the King of the Jukebox, Louis Jordan started a swing-dance music craze way back in the 1930s. His music is still popular today. Five Guys Named Moe, a Broadway musical written by Clarke Peters, features his songs. The play centers on Nomax, a guy who seeks solace in Jordan’s hits including “Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby,” “Caldonia,” and “Five Guys Named Moe.” The Cleveland Play House rendition of the play, which opens tonight at 7:30 at the Allen Theatre, features a six-piece band. In a press release, CPH artistic director Laura Kepley says, “This sizzling musical features six of the hottest and most talented guys around. When programming for January, it’s essential to have a production that will add some heat and get the blood moving — Five Guys Named Moe is just the show to do that.” Tickets are $49 to $79. Students under 24 with a valid ID will be offered a special $15 ticket price. Tickets are also just $25 for anyone under 35, sponsored by Scene. The play runs through Feb. 15. (Niesel)
