Kurt Vile & the Violators/Swirlies

When: Tue., July 9, 8:30 p.m. 2013

Fire up album opener “Wakin on a Pretty Day” from Kurt Vile’s newest album and you’ll get a pretty great idea of where his material is at these days. To begin, his songwriting lands listeners up on some sweetly drifting cloud in the sky. It’s blissful stuff. And meaty too. The average song length on the album has to clock in around six minutes or so. Vile takes his time with the atmospherics of the music, which adds a lot to the overall feel of the songs. The dirge that opens “Girl Named Alex” is more impactful because of its length. Contrast that tune with “Pure Rain,” and you’ll get a sense of the diversity supporting this outing. And, it’s worth pointing out, this spring’s album is only the latest notch in a career that spans about 20 years. Dig deep; it’ll be fun. (Eric Sandy)

Price: $15 ADV, $17 DOS
