Lil' Debbie/Potluck/Demrick/Hough Crowd

When: Wed., March 15, 8:30 p.m. 2017

Bay Area rapper Lil’ Debbie is a pretty divisive figure in the hip-hop community —go check any of her YouTube videos and you’ll see that the comment section is a dumpster fire. Lil’ Debbie rose to prominence along with Kreayshawn (of “Gucci Gucci” fame), but has outlasted her friend and carved out a decent solo career of her own. She fits into the same type of category as RiFF RAFF, who is a frequent collaborator and has appeared in a number of her videos; no one really knows if rappers in this category are serious musicians or a publicity stunt. However, it looks like Lil’ Debbie’s is at least trying to establish herself as a legitimate rapper. Her new single, “F That,” does away with the lollipop and ice cream aesthetic in her previous songs and has her attempting a harder, more traditional rapping style. It remains to be seen if her new album can change perceptions about her musical persona. (Johnny Cook)
