Little Feat

When: Wed., Jan. 9, 8 p.m. 2013

Talk about musical pedigrees. Little Feat’s classic rock roots go as far back as the 1960s. Since then, the band, formed in 1969 in Los Angeles by the late Lowell George, has released over 30 albums. The band’s vigorous focus on basic instrumentals, including complex guitar solos and the deadpan beat of the drums, gives it a more traditional rock vibe. However, they can’t be classified merely as a “rock” band, and the occasional incorporation of piano, harmonica and saxophone gives their music an almost jazzy edge. Needless to say, the soulful “Southern jazz rock” of Little Feat contributes to the popularity they have gained and maintained throughout the past 43 years. As their latest album, last year’s Rooster Rag, the first without longtime drummer Richie Hayward, who passed away in 2010, attests, their refined form of rock easily trumps much of the computerized music put out by contemporary artists.
