Set in the year 2044, Looper intends to be a sci-fi flick with a twist. The twist (time travel), however, doesn’t distinguish it from other better movies with dystopia their core. The plot here centers on Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a hit man of sorts who goes against his boss’s (Jeff Daniels) orders and fails to take out his older self (Bruce Willis), who has come back to kill the child that would grow up to be the man who killed his wife. Joe finds the young child first and tells its mother (Emily Blunt) that he will protect her and the child, setting up a showdown between the young and old versions of Joe. Director Rian Johnson (Brick, The Brothers Bloom) and crew went through a great deal of trouble to ensure that leading actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt would bear a physical resemblance to his co-star Bruce Willis, but that gimmick doesn’t redeem the film.
