This tall-haired Texan has written some brilliant songs over the years. Too bad he's mostly known as the weird-looking guy who was once married to Julia Roberts. Lovett's 20-year career as one of the nation's most steady and eccentric troubadours continues on 2007's It's Not Big It's Large — which is stuffed with his usual wry humor, sharp narratives, and dusty characters. Last time he came to town, Lovett brought along pals John Hiatt, Joe Ely, and Guy Clark for the Songwriters Tour. He returns this week with his longtime backing group, the Large Band. Expect plenty of tunes from the latest record, which masterfully blends country, jazz, gospel, blues, and folk. Pay particular attention to the rootsy zest and zeal of "All Downhill," a nod to his Songwriters partners.
