M83/Bob Moses

When: Wed., June 8, 7 p.m. 2016

French electronic musicians M83 have been an excellent source of department-store pop since the release of 2011’s Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, whose biggest hit, “Midnight City,” boosted the band to indie fame. Although its an understatement to say the quintet seems to be taking itself much less seriously on its newest album, Junk, front man Anthony Gonzalez’s talent for writing pulsing dance music hasn’t faded. The album’s lead single, “Do It, Try It,” is drenched in 80’s pop nostalgia, driven by heavy synth and bass and adorned with cheesy, auto-tuned “oohs” and “ahhs” as it climbs to its loudest peaks. In some ways, M83’s latest feels slightly ironic or satirical as it takes dated pop clichés to their most obnoxious limits, but the music’s inherently danceable style should make for a fun concert, anyway.
