Rock & Pop, Seasonal Special Happenings

Mark Lanegan Band/Cobra Verde/Lyenn

When: Wed., Nov. 5, 8:30 p.m. 2014

Mark Lanegan’s No Bells on Sunday EP from earlier this year set up his exciting new album, Phantom Radio, which hit streets just this month. Interestingly, most of the album’s drum tracks were created via smartphone app Funk Box, reflecting the album’s electronic angle. This new stuff is a far cry from Lanegan’s more blues- and rock-based roles with the Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age. His late-night lounge voice is still in classic Lanegan form, balancing gravelly tones against earnest yearning. Most of the music here mixes upbeat synth melodies on top of simple snare beats (see “Floor of the Ocean” and “The Killing Season” for two divergent interpretations of that style). Even if by the end of the album the sound starts to wear on casual listeners, the overall attitude is an enticing one. Lanegan’s got his hardcore fans and he’s known to cook up a terrific live show, so tonight should bring some great takes on these new tunes. (Sandy)
