Rock & Pop, Seasonal Special Happenings

Mary Chapin Carpenter/Shawn Colvin

When: Mon., Oct. 14, 7:30 p.m. 2013

Last year, singer-songwriters Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin started performing as a duo but their friendship extends back many years. They initially met in the '80s when Carpenter, who was yet unknown, played the D.C. club scene. Because their music tends to fall on the mellow side of the singer-songwriter spectrum (and Carpenter's music is often categorized as country), Carpenter and Colvin often found themselves playing the same kinds of festivals. That camaraderie translated into a successful tour. For the collaborative shows, they play one another's songs and mix in a few choice covers (past set lists have included everything from Steve Earle's "Someday" to Greg Brown's "One Cool Remove"). Though they're not known for light-heartedness, the two tend to banter and joke around between songs. Should make for a fun evening. (Jeff Niesel)
