If Mastodon had been born into any other style of music, its name may not seem as fitting as it does for the members of this heavy, heavy group. Five albums deep into its career, the band has become a favorite among fans of the progressive metal genre as their sound has become greatly refined and more accessible. Since releasing its last album, 2012’s The Hunter, the band has kept busy touring and recording the hour-long instrumental soundtrack for ill-faring western fiction film, Jonah Hex. Even though this film failed, the band isn’t likely to have lost any confidence: The Hunter received almost universal acclaim and was named “Album of the Year” by a few publications. Songs like the album’s opener, “Black Tongue,” are brutal from start to finish, burning through complexly layered guitar riffs in true metal fashion. (Jacob DeSmit)
