Meat Puppets

When: Sat., Oct. 13, 10 p.m. 2012

Originally formed in Phoenix in the mid-’80s, the Meat Puppets were part of the terrific roster of SST Records, the California label that helped introduce acts such as Sonic Youth, Husker Du and Black Flag to the world. While their first few records for SST established them as singular cow punk weirdoes, the band had a real ringer in singer-guitarist Curt Kirkwood, a guy who couldn’t sing for shit but could play the crap out of the electric guitar. As much as the band came from a punk background, these guys could actually play, something that appealed — for a moment — to the burgeoning jam band scene. While the guitar hero theatrics sometimes marred early shows, Curt’s extroverted brother Cris tended to keep those tendencies in check when the band plays live, providing terrific balance. (Niesel)
