“An era-defying mischievousness defines his synthesis of jukebox R&B and acid psych,” as Michael Rault’s label describes his sound. And that’s pretty spot-on. Take “Suckcess,” the first single off his 2014 album: This tune buzzes around fuzzy power-pop power chords and thumping percussion. Backing vocals ooh and ahh around Rault’s snappy lyrical wit. The rest of Living Daylight promises more of the same. Rault wears his influences on his sleeve -- all varied and committed. “All Alone (On My Own)” has the early-20s yearning that both reminds the listener of past rock ‘n’ roll icons and distinguishes Rault from them as a musician in the 2010s. There’s some fine guitar work throughout the album too. (Sandy)
