MIX: Terrific

When: Fri., June 2 2017

In celebration of the portraits, landscapes and still lifes in its current exhibition, the Cleveland Museum of Art’s monthly MIX is going to be terrific. From 6 to 10 p.m. today, guests can expect music, drinks and art activities inspired by Alex Katz and his current exhibition, Brand-New & Terrific: Alex Katz in the 1950s. At a time when Abstract Expressionism dominated the international art market, Alex Katz explored abstraction with recognizable imagery by reducing his compositions to their most fundamental elements: line, form and color. In hindsight, these compositions foreshadowed the rise of Pop Art in the 1960s. Brand-New & Terrific: Alex Katz in the 1950s is currently on view in the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation Hall through August 6. The exhibition is organized by the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, Maine, and curated by Diana Tuite, Katz Curator at Colby. An 18-and-over event, admission to MIX is $10 in advance, $15 on the day of the event and free for CMA members. (Usmani)
