Stand-up comedian Rickey Smiley
has no problem being labeled a clean comic. Still, it's not a conscious move. "What's in you is gonna come out of you," he says. "It all depends on where I am and where I'm performing. If I'm in a smoke-filled club late at night, I might do a dirty joke to get it out of my system." Smiley usually taps his family's quirks for material. For example, he calls his mom a "professional mourner." "I look in the drawer and find 2,000 obituaries," he says. "She went to all of these funerals. It just absolutely amazes me that she could just go to so many funerals."
