  • Blind Pig Speakeasy

    1228 W. 6th St. Downtown/Flats/Warehouse District

    216-621-0001

The club's logo -- a porker in a tie -- says it all. Down and dirty, but still kind of chic, the large, open Pig caters to an older, rock-oriented crowd, with cover bands. Never a cover.
  • Cedarland at the Clinic

    9491 Euclid Ave. East Side/University Circle/Little Italy

    216-791-6606

A clean, casual Lebanese-American eatery across from the Cleveland Clinic, Cedarland has a large menu of Middle Eastern standards, including shishtawook, baked fish, and falafel. Lots of choices for vegetarians. There's a small imported-foods market too.
  • Elements Bistro on Euclid

    2300 Euclid Ave. Downtown/Flats/Warehouse District

    216-802-3131

Saving students and staff from another semester of sloppy joes and shepherd's pie, this sharp bistro on the CSU campus looks, feels and tastes like an independent restaurant. Featuring locally sourced ingredients, the ambitious breakfast and lunch menus tempt both coeds and the community at large at weekday breakfasts and lunches. Attractive sheltered patio.
  • Finn Cafe

    4641 Broadway Downtown/Flats/Warehouse District

    216-713-0090

  • Gasoline Alley

    870 N. Cleveland-Massillon Rd., Bath Akron/Summit County

    330-666-2670

The plastic and neon of the Montrose shopping district are two miles — and several decades — removed from this little roadhouse. But while the Alley's big menu of sandwiches, pizza and salads seems soothingly unfashionable, execution is above average, the car-themed decor is charming, and the attitude is hip.
  • Grumpy's Café

    2621 W. 14th St. Downtown/Flats/Warehouse District

    216-241-5025

A devastating fire put Grumpy’s out of commission for two years, but owner Kathy Owad has resurrected the beloved Tremont café in a cozy new space. Serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, weekend brunch and late-night weekend dining, Grumpy’s pretty much has you covered morning, noon and night. Expect hearty plates of reasonably priced, stick-to-your-ribs comfort food served with cheerfulness.
  • Hattie's Café

    164 N. Main St., Hudson Akron/Summit County

    330-655-0044

This old-fashioned soda fountain and lunch counter not only provides casual fare in a family-friendly setting, but also serves as sheltered employment for clients of the Hattie Larlham agency. The vintage fixtures were salvaged from the former Saywell's Drug Store, a Main Street mainstay for almost seven decades.
  • Hudson's Restaurant and Catering

    80 N. Main St., Hudson Akron/Summit County

    330-650-1955

Comfy, cozy, and family-friendly, Hudson's is a classic neighborhood restaurant, serving reasonably priced breakfast, lunch, and dinner fare, as well as libations from the full bar. While the owners' culinary chops are apparent in creations like Jamaican-spiced pork loin or bourbon-glazed salmon, the menu is far more homey than haute, with enough burgers, chicken, and meatloaf to satisfy even the least adventurous eater.
  • Mahall's 20 Lanes

13200 Madison Ave., Lakewood Western Suburbs

    216-521-3280

The pool room has been turned into a music room, with both local and touring indie bands of all stripes. But the two-level ’60s-style lanes with hand pinsetting are still intact.

  • The Old Angle Tavern

    1848 W. 25th St. Downtown/Flats/Warehouse District

    216-861-5643

The ornamental leprechauns may be suspect, but the rest of the Old Angle is more Dublin than Dublin. Folk and blues musicians play solo by the fireplace hearth at the end of the bar.
  • Pacers

14600 Detroit Ave., Lakewood Western Suburbs

    216-226-2000

Known more for its ribs than its rock, Pacers features DJs on the weekends. A mammoth TV and lots of booths make it a good place to watch sports.
  • Prosperity Social Club

    1109 Starkweather Ave. Downtown/Flats/Warehouse District

    216-937-1938

Cozy and retro, this former workingman’s watering hole serves up food, booze, and a bowling machine along with the live music. You’ll find locals laying down everything from lounge and jazz to folk and bluegrass.

  • Redhawk Grille

7481 Auburn Rd., Painesville Mentor/Lake County

    440-354-4040

  • West End Tavern

18514 Detroit Ave., Lakewood Western Suburbs

    216-521-7684

A venerable Lakewood tavern, complete with tin ceiling, wooden floors, and a well-worn bar, this neighborhood watering hole serves up booze, music, and more than a few made-from-scratch items — including burgers, pot roast, and the popular black-bean soup — during lunch, dinner, and weekend brunches.
  • West Side Market Café

    1979 West 25th St. West Side/Ohio City/Tremont/Detroit Shoreway

    216-579-6800

Another changing of the guard has placed this convenient café inside the West Side Market in good hands. Tom Szoradi, veteran chef and owner of the long-running Juniper Grille, has elevated the quality, consistency, and creativity of this breakfast-and-lunch mainstay. Breakfasts are upscale versions of diner classics; sandwiches consist of house-roasted meats atop artisan-baked breads; and fun starters like sausage-studded Hanky Pankies (cheesy fondue) and tempura-fried shitakes kick-start the meal.

  • Winking Lizard

    820 Prospect Ave. Downtown/Flats/Warehouse District

The triangular downtown Winking Lizard has 70 televisions, which display continuous sports, including games from all major satellite packages.
  • Winking Lizard

6901 Rockside Rd., Independence Southern Suburbs

    216-524-2226

One of many area outposts for this locally based tavern chain, the Independence Winking Lizard offers the typical combo of sports-themed decor, casual noshes — including the better-than-average wings, burgers, wraps and big salads — and a killer collection of suds. Full bar.
  • Yours Truly

    36 S. Main St., Hudson Akron/Summit County

    330-656-2900

The Hudson YT offers the same big menu of freshly ground sirloin burgers, cheese-covered fried potatoes, specialty sandwiches, and "anytime" breakfasts as the other Northeast Ohio locations, in the same casual Victorian atmosphere. The wide selection makes it great for family meals with the kids.
  • Yours Truly

    13228 Shaker Sq. East Side/University Circle/Little Italy

    216-751-8646

The Shibley family launched their Greater Cleveland burger empire in 1981 with the motto, “If you crave it and we have it, we’ll be glad to make it for you.” The restaurants now number six, and the Shaker Heights location is one of the nicest. Juicy gourmet burgers dominate the menu, although hot dogs, chicken sandwiches and omelets are available too. A large breakfast menu, available all day, includes eggs, pancakes, corned-beef hash, and oatmeal.
  • Yours Truly

8111 Rockside Rd., Valley View Southern Suburbs

    216-524-8111

Just the ticket for the hike-and-bike crowd, the newest YT combines a prime location on the Towpath Trail with the usual lineup of burgers, chicken broils, entr'e-size salads, and signature omelets, in a retro-style space that pays homage to the classic American diner. (Hint: Indulge in the cheesy Notso Fries, then hit the trail to work off the guilt.)
