Christoph von Dohnányi, who served as music director of The Cleveland Orchestra from 1984 to 2002 and became music director laureate in 2002, conducts the Orchestra in Severance Hall concerts featuring Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor (“Choral”), Opus 125. Vocal soloists, each in their Cleveland Orchestra debut, are soprano Meagan Miller, mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford, tenor Eric Cutler, and bass-baritone Iain Paterson. Also taking part in the performances of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, prepared by Director of Choruses Robert Porco and Assistant Director of Choruses Lisa Wong. The first part of the program opens with György Ligeti’s Atmosphères, leading directly into Wagner’s Prelude to Act I of Lohengrin. Beethoven’s Ninth is performed following intermission. These concerts mark Mr. Dohnányi’s fourth engagement with The Cleveland Orchestra since he stepped down as music director in 2002. FREE CONCERT PREVIEWS Beginning one hour prior to each concert, a Concert Preview titled “The Triumph of Joy: Beethoven’s Ninth” will be given in the Concert Hall by David J. Rothenberg, associate professor of musicology at Case Western Reserve University. This series is funded by a generous endowment gift from Dorothy Humel Hovorka.
