Twenty years after inventing grindcore, a vicious offspring of hardcore and metal, Napalm Death refuses to chill the fuck out. Smear Campaign, the group's latest, assaults the ears with insatiable fury, while exploring the reasons humanity shouldn't blindly accept religion and its moral codes -- a typical theme for a group that emerged from England's iconoclastic hardcore-punk scene of the early '80s. Back then, a collection of raw demos titled Hatred Surge, as well as Scum, the group's debut, quickly established Napalm Death as one brutal outfit. And unlike many of its peers, Napalm Death exhibited a knack for sonic experimentation, which blossomed throughout the '90s with the discs Fear, Emptiness, Despair, and Diatribes.
