Night Howls

Chi-Town rocker sings about vampires, spiders, and other happy thoughts.

Natural street noises mingle with the sounds of a Stylophone synthesizer and string ensembles on John Ralston's latest album, Sorry Vampire. Maybe that's why he lured at least 18 guest artists into a Chicago studio to help him craft multilayered harmonies on dozens of tracks for each of the disc's 12 songs. Then for the next seven weeks, Ralston recorded and mixed his EP, White Spiders. "I knew when we were done, but I wasn't exactly sure where it was going in the beginning," says Ralston. "I had to make about 80 calls to figure out how to mix five songs, but it was worth it." Hear for yourself at 9 tonight at the Grog Shop, 2785 Euclid Heights Boulevard in Cleveland Heights.
