Now That's Class

Now That's Class is the furthest thing from a jazz club, but Mingus Day might still be the coolest jazz night of the year. Because -- with all due respect to Cleveland's many fine jazz establishments -- if Mingus were kicking around C-Town today, this punk- and metal-friendly rock room is the kind of hang where he could kick back in a dark corner, put on his shades, and plunk his stand-up bass until the whole place was in another world. DJ Bobby is playing all Mingus all night, all the while showing projector films of the bandleader who was free jazz's angriest man -- and its most serenely spiritual. Groovy, man. Groovy.
