Up to this point, Okkervil River has followed the trajectory of just about every other indie rock band. In short, the group released a few critically acclaimed albums that helped it attain a cult fanbase. But with its new album, The Silver Gymnasium, the group has really turned the corner. The guys reveal their Springsteen aspirations and go for it. As a result, songs such as "On a Balcony" and "Down Down the Deep River" have an epic quality. This is one of the year's best albums. Here's to hoping the guys have the ability to make these terrific songs soar when they play them live. (Niesel)
