Faces of Chinatown

Launching its national tour in Cleveland, this exhibit — featuring work by such award-winning artists as photographer Steve Cagan and video producers Luanne Bole-Becker and Bob Becker — uses pictures, text, and audiovisual clips to document the histories of Cleveland's Chinese-American community. An opening reception will be held Friday, September 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. On Saturday, September 15, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the exhibition will be a featured stop on the SPARX City Hop. *Arts Collinwood Gallery: An Exercise in Tangled Self Reference. Ann Hanrahan and Coe Lapossy explore and dramatize the unceasing struggles and high humor of everyday life. An opening reception is set for Friday, September 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. Artist and critic Dan Tranberg will lead a discussion with the artists Thursday, September 27, at 7 p.m. Through October 7 at 15605 Waterloo Rd. Art Spot: Five. The Wine Spot and Cleveland Institute of Art partner to create this new display space. *Beck Center for the Arts: Hispanic Heritage, Hispanic Art. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, works by 13 Latino artists from Northeast Ohio will be on display at the Jean Bulicek Galleria. Also: Esperanza's Young Artists. Students display masks, collages, and prints. *Cuyahoga Community College Gallery East: George Kocar Retrospective. Gonzo painter and illustrator George Kocar exhibits 30 years' worth of satiric paintings, skewering everything from politics and pop culture to his own artistic role model, Pablo Picasso. Kollective Gallery: Ghoul Power. Kids of the '70's and '80's pay tribute to the late-night TV horror host the Ghoul in this group show featuring works by Mitch O'Connell, Matt Gordon, Mark Thompson, and Monique K. Given. * Local Girl Gallery : Domesticated. For the gallery's closing exhibition, artists including Linda Goik, Jacob Corder, and John Cawley display works in various media honoring nonhuman housemates for the benefit of the Cleveland Animal Protective League. *The Sculpture Center: Procession: Song for the Underground Railroad. Oberlin professor Johnny Coleman's historically informed installations invoke the spirit of promise that Cleveland held for escaped slaves on the Underground Railroad. *William Rupnik Gallery: Ontario Gold. Cleveland SGS, the anonymous perpetrators of random acts of populist art, honors and satirizes Ontario Street — host to the Horseshoe Casino and, depending on whom you ask, an epicenter of economic promise or the embodiment of civic desperation.
