Pacific Sunwear, which sells surfing and skateboarding garb, is sponsoring this monthlong road trip featuring a handful of newish bands. Ironically, none of the groups strikes us as the surfing or skateboarding type. Maybe that's because they come from Long Island, Seattle, and, in the case of headliners the Audition, Chicago. These cold and wet climes don't exactly call out for Pacific Sunwear.
Still, there's a bright, melodic glow running through each band's work. The Audition's new album, Champion, especially grabs hold of its dance-pop grooves, splattering them with chunky guitar riffs and inviting everyone along for the bleacher-reaching choruses. Meanwhile, Envy on the Coast (the band from New York) dives a bit more into emo convention, with beat-stomping verses giving way to heart- and voice-shredding declarations of fractured love. Danger Radio — which actually includes a guy from Finland — gets funky on its new EP, Punch Your Lights Out. The slippery "Party Foul" will definitely make you want to shake your groove thing. But not — unfortunately for PacSun — hang ten.
