Paper Diamond/Loudpvck/Branchez/Raw Russ

When: Thu., Feb. 20, 9 p.m. 2014

Under the new name Paper Diamond, Colorado-based producer Alex B finds himself experimenting with his sound. The complex mash-up of synthesizers, some deep and gritty, some chopped and wobbly, make up the melodic lines through quick cuts. Driven by deep bass drums, stylistically similar to trap or dubstep, the tempo is slow but the energy is high. Teetering between genres that would be defined by terms like "complextro," "post-dubstep" or "trap house" (yes, those are all real genre names), Paper Diamond's music does not thrive on definition for success. Representing the growing diversity in electronic music, this genre-less music explodes with energy. His hit "Can We Go Up?" features beautiful female vocals that get placed against a barrage of schizophrenically erratic synthesizers. While nearly half of the textures constantly shift and quake, bumping drums provide solid footing for the music. (Patrick Stoops)
