Paul Anka

When: Sat., May 21, 8 p.m. 2016

In a few ways, the explosive career of Canada's biggest musical export, Justin Bieber, followed a similar trajectory to one of his earliest pop compatriots. Cutting his first single, "I Confess," at age 14, Paul Anka began a storied career as a singer/songwriter and actor in 1957. His first hit, "Diana," topped the Canadian and American charts and is one of the best selling singles by any Canadian musician. He kept busy behind the scenes in the years after; Johnny Carson's Tonight Show theme song was a reworking of Anka's "Toot Sweet," and he earned writing credits on classics such as Tom Jones's "She's a Lady" and Frank Sinatra's "My Way." Although some of the high notes he hit in his youth now elude the 74-year-old, he still has the energy and stage presence to put on a great show. (Jacob DeSmit)
