Paul Samuels: Speak

(Doc City Music)

The familiar gets fresh treatment from Paul Samuels, an East Side drummer making a world-class solo debut. Sparked by the funky organ of Dan Wall and the virtuoso, unexpectedly tender saxophone of Greg Osby, Samuels turns in a relaxed, substantial set dominated by '60s material from John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, and Wayne Shorter. What raises "Speak" above the standard bop homage is the seasoning and joy of this trio. Samuels' drumming is long on brushes, mallets, subtlety, and taste. Not to mention strength.
