Pen & Paper Trail

On the first Saturday of every month since October, Josh Taylor has crammed his notepad with images of Cleveland landmarks. Taylor, a spokesman for Cleveland Downtown Alliance, continues to fill the book with more drawings this morning, when he and fellow amateur artists meet for the two-hour Cleveland Sketch Crawl. This month, it starts in the architecturally ornate Arcade. "For a half-hour, you sketch. Go to another location for another half-hour, and you sketch again," says Taylor, the crawl's co-organizer. "These are quick stops, and they give people the opportunity to hone their skills and explore parts of the city they may never have noticed." In the past, sketchers have drawn inside the Cleveland Public Library's main branch, the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, and Tower City. Next to his sketch, Taylor even scribbles down a one-sentence description of his work for posterity. Today's crawl will wrap up outside the Arcade, where bulldozers and scaffolding continue to litter the landscape for the Euclid Corridor project. "Even though it's bad, it offers an amazing artistic opportunity to capture this bizarre scene in the middle of the city," says Taylor. "It'll be kinda cool to go back to your sketches a year from now and go, 'Dude, I remember when Euclid Avenue was at rock bottom.'" Bring your own pad and pen, and start crawling from 10 a.m. to noon today at the Hyatt Regency at the Arcade, 420 Superior Avenue. Admission is free. Visit
