Pentimento/My Mouth is the Speaker/Gates/Persons/Places/Things/I Love, I Know/Have Mercy

When: Wed., July 16, 7 p.m. 2014

Pentimento and Have Mercy are two bands that both draw on the music scenes of their respective home towns, and they manage to keep it pretty genuine. Hailing from Buffalo, Pentimento plays the kind of punk that was popular 10 years ago. This might make them seem dated, but their high energy is refreshing. Tracks off their latest album Inside the Sea include the likes of “Just Friends” and “It’s Okay” which feature lovelorn vocals singing of unrequited romance while the drumming enthusiastically beats on to the fast-paced chorus of guitar riffs. Conversely, Have Mercy takes a bit of a softer approach and has a decidedly throwback emo sound. Highlights off their latest The Earth Pushed Back include “Let’s Talk About Your Hair” and “Cigarettes and Old Perfume.” Throaty (even shouting at times) vocals soar above harmonic, purring guitar riffs that break down into instances of sparse strumming and lone drums. Lyrics here travel on the sentimental side, and paired with Pentimento, this tour seems like a match made in heaven. (Liz Trenholme)
