Phantogram/Future Islands

When: Tue., Oct. 8, 8:30 p.m. 2013

From the initial synth hiccup in 2009’s “Mouthful of Diamonds,” it became clear that Phantogram was offering something different than the run-of-the-mill electronic acts surrounding them. Sarah Barthel’s sultry detachment certainly had something to do with it, as did the the sleek street-level melodies of songs like “You Are The Ocean” and “When I’m Small.” Barthel and partner-in-crime Josh Carter haven’t released anything since 2011’s Nightlife - that is, until “Black Out Days” quietly dropped onto the Internet last month. It’s a terrific follow-up sound, building out the complex machinations originally cooked up on the band’s debut. Barthel’s voice is a alluring as ever, and the woozy pulse of the bass melds the worlds of hip-hop and contemplative indie pop with aplomb. Check it out. Before tonight’s show, you should cue up “Running From the Cops” and listen out for Barthel’s coo, which kicks in around the 49-second mark. Let the bassline wash over you. Future Islands opens tonight; it’s gonna be great. (Sandy)
