Rock & Pop, Seasonal Special Happenings

PHOX/J.E. Sunde/Emma Shepard

When: Thu., July 31, 9 p.m. 2014

Indie rockers Vampire Weekend introduced hipsters to world music, paving the way for a band like PHOX. The group's self-titled debut features lilting vocals that are paired with African and Caribbean rhythms. Songs such as "1936" have much in common with Paul Simon's Graceland but mix in some cooing vocals and folk harmonies. These songs are so infectious, they'll have patrons singing and swaying along in unison at tonight's show. Be sure to arrive in time to catch opener J.E. Sunde. The former singer of the Daredevil Christopher Wright. He's just issued his solo debut, Shapes that Kiss the Lips of God, a neo-folk album that shows off his distinctive vocals. (Niesel)
