While the trailer for this comedy makes it resemble an episode of Glee, the film has much more going for it. The movie stars Anna Kendrick as Beca, a college freshman with show-biz aspirations. She quickly gravitates toward an a cappella singing group led by a couple of stuck-up women who have lowered their standards just so they can lure a crop of new talent into the fold. As a result, new recruits like Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) don’t have model-esque good looks. But like the Bad New Bears, these women defy the odds as they take on a rival male group and try to get to “nationals.” The similarities to Glee are endless, but Pitch Perfect isn’t particularly reverent in its approach, and the often crude language and humor are actually strengths.
