Rad Thai

With Tears of the Black Tiger, filmmaker Wisit Sasanatieng made Thailand’s best Western. Granted, we can’t name another Thai oater, but this fast, funny, and visually gorgeous movie would undoubtedly top the list. The story is a conventional one: Peasant boy loves rich girl whose daddy doesn’t approve. So he becomes a notorious bandit. But the narrative takes second saddle to the slo-mo, blood-soaked shoot-outs. A director hasn’t had this much fun with the genre since Sam Peckinpah took The Wild Bunch for a ride.
