Royal Pines

When: Thu., Oct. 2, 10 p.m. 2014

There’s something in Joe Patt’s vocals on Royal Pines’ latest album that makes it sound like this thing was recorded on a stage, rather than in the studio. Throughout, Three Sheets possesses an urgent, seething quality. Songs like “See That Wall” and “Who Ya’ Want Me Ta Kill?” chug along with more than a hint of darkness beneath the surface of Royal Pines’ rock ’n’ roll vibes. And musically speaking, what could have remained a simple 4/4 rock outing transforms into a dynamic whirlpool of rhythms via Joe Gerdeman’s drumming (see “Ocean Sets Me Right,” one of the best songs on the album, for a fine example). The band says that one person once described their sound as “heavy wood,” which sums this whole thing up about as well as anything. 10 p.m., $5. Happy Dog. (Eric Sandy)

Price: $5
